Shabby Birdhouses

I was working in the front yard this morning and noticed how "shabby" my bird houses are looking.....should I paint them or not.    I like the shabby look,  but I don't want them to fall apart either.  Maybe  I could just put a sealer coat on them...any idea's?

I have collected quite a few birdhouses over the years.

Several years ago,   H buried three porch posts in the front yard to display birdhouses on.    He screwed wrought iron shelf supports to the posts  (HL has some similar to the ones he used on our posts)   Then he screwed a block of wood on the top of them to attach our birdhouses to.

Most of my birdhouses are yard sale finds....

Some were bought years ago at HL......

This is another porch post that he put together for me to hang bird cages on.    This post is standing on a vintage iron Christmas tree stand.

I found two cages alike (at different times)  ....one has weathered a little different than the other....

This is a standing birdhouse that I bought my mother one year.    I usually keep it up under the eaves on the porch to keep it from weathering,  but I brought it out into the sun to get a better photo.

This is my favorite one....

I changed my ladies clothes after Memorial Day.    It will be fun to dress her for the different seasons and holidays.

I have freshened up the front porch,   but that is another post!

  3. What fun. I kind of like the different shades of shabby that some of the birdhouses have taken on. If you want a fresh pristine look I suppose you could repaint them but I don't mind them just as they are. Love those twin birdcages. xo Diana

  4. Adding a light coat of sealer will help them last a bit longer! Personally, I probably wouldn't paint them much, maybe just a light touch here or there! Love them the way they are! Your front patio area is such an inviting place! Enjoy, Cindy

  5. I might use clear sealer on the bird houses....... I wouldn't touch them with paint.... Especially the truly vintage ones.
More inclined to move the endangered ones to a more protected location and use something else out in the weather.

  6. I would definitely put some sort of sealer on them. It would help them last a lot longer. Wonder what they use on wooden boats>

    1. Rose - they use a marine varnish on the boats. I've found through experience that the marine varnish gives a yellow look to the piece. Jackie

  7. I'd spray them with a clear sealer but leave them looking shabby....H is such an artisan and craftsman..... Amazing!!

  8. I love all your birdhouses and how they're displayed! I'd put a sealer on the birdhouses - the outside only. Make sure to clean the birdhouses before sealing. If you want the project to go quickly, use Krylon and spray it on. It comes in a few different finishes: matte, glossy and not so glossy. (You can buy it at Wal Mart pretty cheap.)

  9. Penny, good morning! :) Either way you go will be good. Aged and looking shabby or painted your pinks with roses...it's all in what fits in your bonnet and makes you feel good. Besides..if you paint them..they will age again..and look even sweeter. You cannot lose! :) Hugs!!

  10. Such a beautiful and welcoming entry way you have, love the bird houses, we too had one that in the end feel apart and the bees over took it and made a bee hive out of it, so the poor birds couldn't use it anymore. Loved to see your collection!!
