How to Make a Fall Wreath with Natural Materials

I made a fall wreath with all natural materials gathered from our yard,  the only addition was some stalks of grain from a nearby field.   You could easily substitute some natural grasses from your yard for the grain....let your imagination run wild!
I covered a grapevine wreath by tying the stalks of grain to it.   The grain heads are fairly heavy,  so to insure that they won't droop as they dry,  I tied them near the top of the grain head and near the bottom of the stalk.     I didn't strip the leaves off of the stalk as they will be pretty when they are dry.
Don't be afraid to cut flowers that are still in bloom or leaves that are just turning.   Everything will be so pretty as it dries on your wreath.
I already had a basket of sunflowers and roses that I had dried earlier in the summer.    But,  I also went out and cut some zinnias that were partially dried and also some purple sage that was dried on the stem.
Once I had the grain and the sunflowers secured on my wreath,   I hung it on the wall to add the finishing touches.   I added all the flowers that I had dried earlier this summer and also the ones that I had just cut.
You can hang your wreath outdoors,  but remember,   dried materials don't last very long in the wind and rain.
I wanted to show you several close ups of my wreath.....
I dry almost all the flowers that are grown in our garden.        I always save every little piece of babysbreath,   as I think it adds so much to any arrangement.
If you want to,  you can add a dab of hot glue to the end of each stem as you put them in your wreath.    I just tuck my pieces in because my wreath will just hang on the wall.
I cut my sunflowers when they are in full bloom so that some of the yellow petals will be on the flower when it is dry.
You can see that the birds got to this poor sunflower before I did.....lol!

Can you see how pretty the zinnias are as they are drying on the stem.    If you have trouble finding dried materials for your wreath from the yard,  the local craft store will usually have a good selection.

I have a vignette of fall colors on the table below the wreath.     The huge dictionary on the left side of the table is one of H'S collection of vintage books.....it's my favorite book to decorate with.
The vintage teapot belonged to my mother......
I am not very good at tutorials.....I hope I was able to help you  just a little...tiny....ity...bitty....bit!

  5. Penny, your wreath is lovely! I haven't made a wreath in ages and I used to make them all the time. I wouldn't dare hang that one on my door. The wind would have it apart in less than ten minutes. {I live in a very windy area.} Pretty tea vignette and that is a wonderful dictionary! Thank you for joining me for Tea Time and enjoy your week.

    Blessings,
    Sandi

  6. Love the wreath. I used to make my own when I had grape vines and lots of wild things growing in the fields. Seem to have gotten away from it now. I really enjoyed seeing yours.

  11. very beautiful, looks like a LOT of work though. I would certainly enjoy having it but not sure I would have fun making it.
Maybe I could handle a simpler version. I would not want to waste all those lovely flowers.

  13. I've never considered making a 'dried flower' wreath. I actually have quite the collection of dried flowers around (because I can never part with anything) and this might be a great way to use them. I love that you also used some that were still partially alive to give it some color too. Lovely!

  14. Wow! You inspire me to go run outside (well, when it becomes daylight) and start looking for things to add to my wreath... fun tutorial, thanks!
