Moss Covered Mailbox

I wanted to give my vintage mailbox a new look for summer,  but I didn't want to do my old standby......paint it a new color.

I thought about decoupaging some pretty flowers on it,  but in the end I picked something I hadn't done before......

I covered my mailbox  with green moss and chicken wire......

I cut the sheet moss to the size of my large mailbox........tacked the moss to the mailbox with hot glue......then cut my chicken wire the size of the mail box front and back.     I cut the chicken wire for the sides a couple of inches longer on each side to tuck in under the box.

Now the fun part begins.......decorating my mailbox!

I put greenery inside the box along with a small bird nest.      I covered the mailbox flap with moss and set a "condo" birdhouse on it.

I used a short rusty ladder as a post for my mailbox to sit on......

I added my mailbox to the north side of the studio by the faux door.    I have been sharing posts with the progress on this side of the studio for several days.      If you missed any of the other progress posts,  you'll find a link to them at the end of this one.

Since I left the lid open and sat a birdhouse and moss on it,    I needed to figure out a way to keep my lid from dropping down and dumping my house and moss on the ground.      I decided to use a pretty crystal and brass lamp base that was the exact length that I needed!

I pushed my lamp base firmly into the ground......

Then I tied the light bulb holder to the little thingy that you open the lid with to get your mail out.    I think that should keep my stand in place!

Of course   I always decorate my project and everything around it....lol!      I added some ducks to the vignette and a few plants.

Now I will complete the north side of the studio by doing something on the east side of the faux door!

Here are the links to the other two progress posts if you missed them......

  2. Penny,
I love this idea. I wish I could do this with the mailbox that I have out front but with the amount of rain that we have been getting ( another 1 1/2 since Monday) it would never hold up! More rain showers predicted for all of next week with high's in the 60's some days!! This is definitely a cool and rainer Spring for us!!

  3. I love it. I have an old mailbox that I have been hanging onto in case a project came along. (it was knocked down one too many times) I would have never thought about chicken wire over the moss. A pretty mailbox like that might have to stay inside.
Thanks for sharing your creativity with us.
