Trick or Treat Mantle

We spend a lot of time in the family room , so I always try to make the holiday mantles special. I love our fireplace NOW.  It used to be black..yep, black lava rock.  It didn't even have a mantle!  We painted it white, added the columns, and the mantle.  The only thing that is original is the black marble hearth.  There are glass doors behind my flour sacks and gas logs,  I love a real fire in the winter, but this is they way we got the house and I guess we won't change it.

I added some black ribbon to the chandys.   I also strung a lit garland across the front of the fireplace. I made the garland by  tieing strips of cloth to a string of Christmas lights ( be sure to use the cool lights if you do this project)

Here's my little pumpkin boy with his school books.

I've had this little couple for quite a few years. ( Notice the orange and pink together!)

I took down the fireplace screen. Then I covered the glass doors with some flour sacks. (It is a gas fireplace, so I don't really need the screen, it's just ornamental). In the screens place, I put this vintage Watkins box. Watkins salesmen used to carry these door to door to sell their products.  It has metal handles, and three open compartments.  I filled the open compartments with blue mason jars and candles.

I use lots of candles during the holidays.

I love my Trick or Treat garland because it was so easy!  It has glittered letters....

pretty pattern...

and it was $4 at Target!

The boxes that you see on the mantle are kind of unusual!  Do you know what they are?

Hint...

They are bread drawers for a hoosier!  I found them at a yard sale in Amarillo , Tx this past summer. They were $1 each, I got 4 of them......didn't know what I would do with them at the time, but I thought they were neat!  I have had them out in the studio storing supplies.

I have mentioned before that I usually keep covers on the furniture.

This one is a shower curtain that I got at a yard sale for a couple of dollars. ,

If you would like to see the before pictures of the mantle, here is the link    http://penny-pennystreasures.blogspot.com/2012/07/fluffing-up-fireplace.html     I am so glad that you came by and visited me, please come back soon!  I would love it if you would leave a comment!
