Ornamental Hyacinth Beans

When I planted some hyacinth beans in this little white wagon,  I had a vision that the vines would spill over the sides of the wagon....wrong!   The vines grow upward and wind around anything they touch.

The vines are winding around the iron headboard by the wagon and also up onto the hanging asparagus fern baskets.
The vine produces a pretty purple flower.....

that turns into a bean pod.

The beans are not edible....just ornamental.
The yard is just beautiful in full summer bloom!

  1. Gorgeous! Mine aren't blooming yet but it's almost time. :)

  2. Sounds like the English ivy plants. They are almost impossible to get rid of as they climb and grow, even up tall fir and other trees. They are an invasive plant in Oregon and destroy trees and habitat that is native. Keep that climber in check!

  3. Your backyard is TO DIE FOR! You definitely need to come share this with my party I host every week (it opened yesterday)! :)

  8. I have one just like that..and I am thinking I need to buy a new trellis..something for it to cling to as it is wrapping itself around everything. It's happy on the porch. LOVE the little white wagon, by the way. Beautiful plant though, isn't it?
I know that Morning Glories are very invasive too. I once had to pay two hundred dollars to have mine removed from my neighbors pretty Cyprus tree's...as they had wrapped around them and were strangling them. No more of planting things like that where I can't control it. It looks like yours is winding in your own tree. They can be distructive. Such a lovely yard, Penny!!

  17. I love how pretty the hyacinth beans vines are. I planted some myself this year but they did not do very well. It was my first year planting them and I think I buried the seeds too deep in the ground. My MIL's has done terrific though and she planted hers a month or more after I did. I think these would be gorgeous growing up an arbor.

  24. I was given some of these seeds from another blogger ( over at Simply Balisha ) and that poor vine had a terrible time since something kept eating its leaves as soon as it would grow a few. It has FINALLY started to take off and I HOPE that it will be as pretty as yours is soon! :)
