Planting an Old Fashion Flower Garden

In honor of Earth Day ,   I wanted to share the old fashion flower garden that H and I just completed.     Our hands have been covered in "earth" for the last two days getting this flower garden dug up...lol

We completed the new greenhouse just about this same time last year,  so all we had time to do was dig a small area up.    We had plans to expand it this spring,  so we got busy planning our new garden.

We used a hose to mark the area that was to be dug up.    I like a curvy border better than a square one.

We had a few plants that came back from last year,  so we left them where they were.

It is a pretty large area,  so I needed plenty of new plants to fill it in.

The photo on the right shows our "wuggy".....a marriage of a baby buggy and wagon that H made.

I played with the plants until I pretty much had them the way they would be planted.

After all the plants were in,  we added some bark mulch to help hold the water in and also to make the flower bed look more finished.

For a little whimsy,  I have our initials on each side of the greenhouse porch.

The first photo shows the original flower bed just after we completed the green house.

The second one shows how it looked at the end of the summer.   I planted one of those prepackaged wild flower mixes.   Those are great,  but I learned that you can't control what comes up where.   I guess I'm a control freak because I didn't like my garden flowers to be all "willy nilly"

The third photo....much better!

I have left the center (under the white metal wheel barrow)  empty on purpose.   We are going to transplant some hosta's that are in the front yard to that area.  The hosta's aren't thriving where they are,  so we hope they will do better in their new home.
I have had so much fun making garden ladies this spring.   I still have clothes for two more!

  3. Penny..I immediately called PH in and showed him all you two had accomplished. Told him how your husband helped and dug.. He just said "I'm better with things electric and if you need your TV repaired, I'm your man" and walked back t his crossword. Ah well. I guess my next bet is the gardner..but he only mows, blows and goes!
The scarecrow is just what all scare crows should look like. LOVE her outfit! :)
