Antiquing and a Free 72 oz Steak!

H and I had a wonderful day out last Friday....a little road trip....some antiquing.....sightseeing......and a big steak!    We drove an hour and a half to Amarillo Texas to do a little antiquing and eat lunch.....we also went to a few estate and yard sales.
Our first stop was 6th Street....it was originally Texas 66.   Old 66 was long ago replaced by the big interstate highway,  but it is still bustling with activity.

Quaint little antique shops line both sides of the street for about a mile stretch of the old route 66.....

Here are just a few....
of the shops along .....
Texas 66.

There are plenty of places to get a bite to eat.....

you can spend the whole day shopping ....

and you won't find a friendlier bunch of people!
Not far from 6th street is the old downtown Amarillo.....

Painted concrete horses are a common sight around Amarillo.

Loved this M Monroe horse...

The horses are hand painted by local artists....

Flag horse.......................Southwest scene..........................and a Coca Cola horse
Happy State Bank's horse.....
This black horse was in front of the Amarillo PD............Texas long horn...................and the white horse was in front of the Sr Citizens building.
After a long day of shopping and sight seeing,   we went out to the Big Texan Steak house......
Now partner,   this isn't just any old steak house......
If you can eat a 72 oz steak  in an hour ....it's free!    Their steaks are delish...but 6 oz is about my limit!   I have seen people eat the 72 oz steak on the food channel....the steak looks more like a big roast,   there is a salad,  and a big baked potato that you have to eat also. (and you have to eat the entire steak...fat...gristle....all of it...yuk)

Take your picture out front with a Texas band...............................................or in a covered wagon

There are plenty of hotel rooms if you want to stay over night.....maybe go see the musical TEXAS.   TEXAS is an outdoor musical performed down in the canyon at Paloduro.   (YouTube has a wonderful video if you would like to see part of the show.)
There is a corral for dogs to take care of business.....see the cute little beagle out in the "corral"?   His owner was sitting on the big wagon wheel bench while he "took care of business"
There is even a horse hotel....remember....this is Texas!

I hope "ya'll"  enjoyed our day in Amarillo as much as we did!

  1. What a fun day and yes I do love Texas. I started my first store there near Houston in 1987. I loved Texas and the food was terrific as you have so demonstrated!

  2. Looks like a wonderful place to visit and shop. How cool they have painted horses. I don't usually go to antique shops, but I'm all about going to yard sales.

  3. Avery unique place! There is a quaint little town here in Oregon down the road from me called Aurora and it is full of antique and re-purposed stores. Great place to explore.

  4. What a wonderful area and the colors of the shops are so pretty. All the different painted horses are cute, thanks for showing us the area.

  5. Penny,
This was a treat for me to see because as your hubby knows, being from NY, we do not have things like this up north!!

The buildings are so different from what we have here and what a great sampling of shops for you to go to!!

We actually have mules here done by local artists and not horses. There is a mule right up the street from the Post Office that Joe works out of. The mules had something to do with hauling coal out of the mines....

The steak made me laugh because all I could thin of was the movie. Great Outdoors with John Candy who eat a steak like that!! That is one of my favorite movies!!

Thanks so much for taking us all long with you on your day trip... This Northerner appreciated it!!

    Hugs,
    Deb

  9. Well, that must have been a great day. I'd love to visit a place that has that many antique stores. Up here we have to be satisfied with one here or there. It's hard to make a day of it with so few. I'm glad to hear that you resisted that enormous steak!

  10. I LOVE little shops like that, but I want everything I see! :)

  11. We drove Route 66 last fall. I've got a post for each day of the 3 week trip. LOVED it. We spend 2 nights in Amarillo and went to church Sun morn there, and I'm sure we saw these places but I didn't get all the pictures you have shared here. Thank-you so much.

  12. What fun! My mother was from Amarillo and I still have lots of family there. We've eaten at the Big Texan many times and my mother used to "run 66" when she was a teenager. I'd love to go back soon. Thanks for sharing.

  13. Visiting from Linda's and I loved the tour! Where TX is home to the huge steak, West Virginia has the "Homewrecker" hot dog from the Hillbilly Hot Dogs stand just about an hour from my home, lol. That M. Monroe horse is the bomb - love the figure coming from the leg of the horse. God Bless the USA and all its quirky variety - ya gotta love it!

  14. That looks so fun! Route 66 is one of our favorite destination vacations, and I'm pretty sure we've been through Amarillo, but we must've missed the antique shops. I'll have to look for them if we get that way again.

  15. Absolutely delightful! What a fun place to go and the food choices look so good!

  16. I love going on virtual junkin trips like this! I don't blame you for not trying to get the free steak - it's not worth it. I really like some of those cool buildings you showed. Thank you for joining the History & Home link party at We Call It Junkin! ~ Dawn

  18. Penny, that looks like a fun trip. We are native Texans and I've never been to Amarillo. I would pass on that steak though.

  19. So fun! I lived in Oklahoma for most of my life and a drive down to Texas was something my friends and I did all the time. My BFF had family in Austin and it felt like we were driving down there every other weekend. When we were not going to Austin we would head Dallas often. One thing about Oklahoma I did not appreciate enough as a youngster was the Route 66. I appreciate it much more now that I am older and no longer live in the south. 23. Sounds like you had a really fun trip. I always like seeing parts of old Highway 66 because I guess you could say Old Highway 66 has been a major part of my life. When my husband and I got married we lived right next to old 66 that goes through Illinois. A few years after marriage we moved to Missouri where guess what, we live next to Old Highway 66 and have lived here for the past 23 years. I love the nostalgic sights along this old highway. Maybe someday I will make it to Amarillo for some shopping.

  25. This looks like so much fun! We drove Route 66 a couple years ago and loved every bit of it! I also remember visiting Amarillo when I was a kid; we'd go see family there every so often. I love Texas and Old 66; makes me want to go back and explore some of those antique shops.:) Thanks so much for sharing on Inspire Me Wednesday. Featuring you in this week's issue.

  26. Loved it! Looks like a place I would love to go. Hubby came home the other day and was telling me about some fun quaint place with lots of antiquing in CA. Thought we might go there for your birthday, he said. Isn't he a sweetheart? Sounds like a trip to heaven. lol! Thanks for sharing with SYC. I've seen those eat it all places on the food channel.

  27. My family drove through Amarillo last fall on our way to California (kind of the long way, I guess). I really wanted to stop at the Big Texan but that didn't work out. The only stop we made was to the Cadillac Ranch- against my teens' wishes. Let's just say it was very memorable. ;)

  28. I was hoping you tried to eat the steak! LOL! What a neat town. We live in Tulsa near Route 66 and I've always wanted to travel more on the mother road! Fun!
