Grow Celery in your Kitchen!

I was reading the other day about rooting  celery and thought I would give it a try!   What do you have to lose?  It's the end that I normally throw away in the trash...and the kids (and grown ups) can have fun watching it grow!

Cut the top of your celery stalk off , put the bottom in a shallow bowl of water, wait about a week....and wa-la!   (celery ends also make a great rose stamp...can you see how it looks like a rose?  Just dip in paint and stamp away!)

See how it starts to sprout celery leaves!   When  it starts to rot around the stalk, it is time to plant it in some dirt.   I use half potting soil and half garden dirt as my potting mixture.

Celery leaves are wonderful chopped up in soup or stew...and I think it makes a beautiful kitchen plant!

Of course I had to add my little touches to it....a flower frog with a cute bird cage on it...and some moss over the dirt.

I also added a vintage stove pipe air flow control thingy!!!

I put it on a table with my gardening books....

in a sunny window!

While I had my dirt out, I needed to repot this dill plant

I selected a pretty pink ceramic pot.  My pot didn't have any drainage, so I added some pea gravel to the bottom before adding the dirt.

Now it's time to add some little touches....a bloom sign....and a sweet little figure on a flower frog.   I like to set accessories on a flower frog so they won't be sitting in the dirt!

I love my sweet little indoor garden!

til next time....

  5. Good Morning Penny, Well I never, I did not realise that celery could be rooted this way. My husband loves celery, but I am not so keen, but I like the idea of growing the shoots and adding them to my cooking as the celery flavour will not be so strong.
I am now going to the kitchen to cut the end off my celery and give this a go. Thank you for this fabulous tip.
    Have a lovely weekend,
    Best Wishes
    Daphne

  15. Thank you so much for sharing this! I've been meaning to try growing my own celery from the bottom but kept putting it off thinking I was missing a step. Now I know what that step was, so thank you.
PS - I love your little accents.

  16. Penny it's lovely,When my children were little,we used to grow carrot tops in a saucer of water on the window sill. They loved doing this. I did plant a celery root in the garden, which grew but then disappeared :)

  17. Penny, I've been having fun doing the same thing!! I've also rooted Romaine, red leaf and green leaf lettuces. Follow the same procedure...cut about the bottom one-inch and place in water. The containers from one of the popular Green yogurt are perfect! I've also rooted carrot tops, and Red and Green onions using the same process!

    Have a great day!
