Paintable wallpaper may not be for everyone, but it was certainly the answer to the problems in our guest bathroom. The pink floral wallpaper in the bathroom was original to the home...built in the 60's. It was pretty well worn out and needed to be replaced.
I really wanted the simplicity of painted walls,, but that didn't seem to be an option.
The wallpaper had been hung directly onto the wallboard so it could not be stripped off......not a drop of paint on the drywall....no texture....nothing!!! When I tried to take off the wallpaper, it was damaging the wallboard. Even if I had been able to get the wallpaper off, I would have still needed to hire someone to come in and texture the wall.
A few years ago I added some Paris prints to update the floral paper a bit......just as a temporary fix. I used stippable paste to attach them to the wallpaper, but I still couldn't get a few pieces off.
I am so pleased with how paintable wallpaper has been the answer to my problem bathroom. I now have texture on the walls, and I can paint it a color if I decide to later down the road.
We completed the wall above the vanity today, but as you can see in the mirror, the opposite wall is still pink.
See you soon with more progress on our guest bathroom.
Looks wonderful! I did the same thing with my bathroom and had to have someone come in and completely resheetrock the walls. When I pulled the paper off the sheetrock paper came off and just ruined the walls. YUCK!
I've done that also. When we moved here there was wallpaper in every room. Most of the wallpaper we stripped off but gouged the walls doing it. My sister painted right over her wallpaper in one of her rooms. Love the mirrors. :) linda
I'm sure you will enjoy the finished room! I can never understand why contractors would allow wallpaper to be put directly on wallboard without paint, but I guess they did things differently back in the day! The painted wallpaper looks really pretty with what you have finished! Enjoy the process! Blessings, Cindy
Penny, I think that was a great solution to your problem. And if you want, you can paint it further down the line. looking good and loving watching your progress. Hugs, Deb
It looks terrific and a much better fix then having to hire someone to come in. I have seen these in the stores and they are so many great styles, this looks great against your mirror style!
UM, to begin with solving our own problems,---that is what we are all about. DIY!--isn't just a choice, it's a lifestyle. Ruined drywall is a pain, and bathroom spaces are a pain. Textured wallpaper…isn't wallpaper when its painted white, its TEXTURE; another element in the decorator's palette. You go girl, I think it is the perfect solution. And we will be covering up destroyed drywall on our kitchen ceiling with bead board for the same reason---at 67and 68---DIY drywall on a ceiling is out of the question. Smiles!
This is good to know. The plaster walls in our house are not doing well and I'm very nervous about stripping the wallpaper in the kitchen. I have been wondering if paintable wallpaper is the answer for us.
